Newly hired N.C. Cooperative Extension staff, including 15 EFNEP team members from across the state, gathered on NC State’s Centennial Campus this week for the inaugural Extension Early Career Conference. EFNEP staff traveled from Buncombe, Cabarrus, Pender, Wake, Alamance, Johnston, Northampton, Wayne, Anson, Martin, Onslow, Rutherford, Gaston, and Henderson counties. These EFNEP educators range from 2 weeks on the job to just over 2 years.

The goals of the conference were to:

  • Create a sense of belonging, community, and connection among early career employees of our organization.
  • Increase employee engagement and retention among early career employees of our organization.
  • Enhance communication and collaboration among early career employees of our organization.
  • Delivery of relevant and timely training.

In addition to learning about technical and soft skills, EFNEP educators were introduced to Extension’s program development model and working with Extension volunteers. Topics included program planning, recruitment, volunteer management, and community partnerships. There was even an opportunity to tour some sites on campus! Since the Cooperative Extension model focuses on county centers within local communities across the state, this conference was a wonderful opportunity to bring staff to campus and connect with the Land Grant mission.
