Pressure Canner Testing…

Are you ready to start canning your final summer harvests? It is recommended to test your pressure gauge annually.

It is recommended to test your gauge annually if you pressure can with a dial gauge. This can be done right in the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Halifax  County Center for FREE! All you need to do is contact Sara Pike to schedule a gauge testing appointment. No need to haul in your whole canner, just bring in your lid with dial gauge. Our master dial gauge will test the accuracy of your National, Magic Seal, Maid of Honor, and Presto Pressure Canner dial gauges. It is not for All American canners.

What is Safe Plates?

Safe Plates is NC State Extension’s family of evidence-based food safety programming and resources for retail, community and home-based food safety.

Cooking Programs

We are offering cooking classes at…

  • Halifax Cooperative Extension Kitchen— 4-H Cooking Club, Third Thursday of the month Starting September 19th from 4:00-5:30

4-H Cooking Club

Youth ages 5-18 can join and learn how to cook and bake a variety of new dishes! Youth will also have to opportunity to create a cooking team that can compete in next years Dinah Gore Cooking Challenge.

Cook Smart Eat Smart:

Classes to come, Reach out to Sara if interested in this program

The Cook Smart, Eat Smart curriculum teaches cooking techniques that can be used to build a repertoire of entrees and side dishes to encourage preparing and eating more meals at home. There is an emphasis on healthy preparation techniques, simple ingredients and limited use of prepared foods. In addition, information is presented to help participants plan, shop and stock a pantry that encourages simple meal preparation. Each session contains several basic cooking techniques and other topics related to preparing and eating meals at home.

Med instead of Meds:

Reach out to Sara to learn about classes being offered.

Med Instead of Meds was created by a group of nutrition and health professionals from NC State University and NC Division of Public Health. Eating the Med Way has been proven to protect against chronic illness. In some cases, eating the Med Way may even result in decreasing medications taken for blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes.* Hence the name Med Instead of Meds. We are passionate about providing people with the information and tools needed to make delicious meals for themselves and their families. We too are on this journey with you to transform our eating to the Med Way.


LIFT Fitness Classes

What is LIFT

  • LIFT is an in-person, group- based strength training program that lasts 8 weeks.
  • Participants meet 2x/ week for 1-hour sessions.
  • The classes help improve your strength and mobility, learn healthy food options, and most importantly help form a community.

Take Control:

Looking for sites to offer Take Control.

Take Control is an 8 session chronic disease prevention program that provides strategies to help adults manage their health. It informs, empowers, and motivates participants to change their eating and physical activity patterns. The program provides opportunities for participants to track their goals and progress toward healthy eating and physical activity behaviors. Each 1-hour session contains a basic cooking demonstration of a healthy recipe. The recipes and nutrition handouts are provided to program participants.

Color Me Healthy:

Looking for sites to offer Color Me Healthy.

Color Me Healthy is a program developed to reach children ages four and five with fun, interactive learning opportunities on physical activity and healthy eating.

It is designed to stimulate all of the senses of young children: touch, smell, sight, sound, and, of course, taste. Through the use of color, music, and exploration of the senses, Color Me Healthy teaches children that healthy food and physical activity are fun.

We are looking for sites and schools to offer Color Me Healthy to Pre-K and. We are always looking for groups to offer other programs with Steps to Health. Reach out to Sara Pike if you are interested in hosting an FCS program in your community.

What is Faithful families Our Vision: Faithful Families believes that communities of faith are important health advocates, particularly in communities affected by health disparities or lacking access to crucial resources. That’s why we are here to empower faith communities as they become change makers in helping their communities thrive—physically, mentally, and spiritually. 

Kids Club:

Looking for sites to offer Kids Club.

Steps to Health’s Kids Club is a program is made up of eight 30-minute sessions teaching youth about nutrition and physical activity. Topics covered include: Being active indoors and outdoors, Improving bone and heart health, Eating more fruits and vegetables, and Drinking more water.

Policies Systems and Environmental Changes: 

Policy, systems, and environmental (PSE) change environmental interventions have a great potential to improve a community’s health by addressing socioeconomic factors and by making healthy choices more accessible in the social, physical and economic environment.
